Hello. Welcome to the first day of class for Fall 2022.
My name is Peter Lewin. I have been teaching on and off since 1970 and I love what I do. I have met thousands of students over the years and seen fashions come and go, in clothing and in ideas. The nature of the university/college has changed as well.
So I ask myself, after all these years, what is it I can hope to give you? In what way can I use my knowledge and experience to make a valuable difference in your young lives?
This question has become particularly difficult recently because of the polarized environment that characterizes public discourse and academic institutions. The battle over ideas has turned hostile. One has to struggle more to get a fair, dispassionate hearing for unpopular ideas – regardless of their logical or empirical validity. And I have quite a few unpopular ideas that I want to present to you for your careful and honest consideration.
It is my fervent hope that you are young enough, and I am pleasant and reasonable enough, for us to be able to have an open respectful discussion of conflicting ideas, and that, you will come away from this course more critical, but also, more prepared to entertain the ideas of others’ no matter how wrong they at first seem.
So open your minds, open your hearts and lets learn together one of the most important illuminating and exciting subjects of your life, economics.

And perhaps students, the world before you is going to change into something very different from what most of us accept as real. This may be one of the reasons for the disconsolate and deeply conflicting feelings of polarization. We can choose or not to turn on the light of a much larger view of life and consciousness or not. That is the fun that awaits by looking for the switch.
